Viola Elma (Goltz) Geistfeld was born on November 30, 1933, on the family farm in Posen Township to Fred and Clara (Krosch) Goltz. Viola grew up on the farm and attended Wood Lake public school through the sixth grade. She then attended St. John’s Lutheran School in Wood Lake for grades seven and eight before graduating from the Wood Lake High School. After high school, Viola worked as a secretary for Wood Lake public schools. On August 29, 1954, Viola was united in marriage to Myron Geistfeld at St. John’s Lutheran Church. The couple began their married life on Myron’s grandfather’s farm in Posen Township, before moving to their own place in 1957. Viola enjoyed being a farmer’s wife, helping drive tractors, chopping corn stalks, gardening, and canning. She also enjoyed sewing, becoming an expert in patching Myron’s work pants. The couple moved into Wood Lake in 2003, where they lived in a home owned by Viola’s family for over 100 years. Viola enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She and Myron roller skated and visited movie theaters in their younger years. Viola also enjoyed traveling. She went to Germany once by herself, then six more times with Myron. They visited numerous countries in Europe on their trips. The couple also traveled to Cancun, Hawaii to see Pearl Harbor and a few of the islands, as well as many other states throughout the country. Closer to home, they enjoyed participating in Oktoberfest in New Ulm and Stiftungsfest in Norwood Young America every year. Viola died on Wednesday, April 21, 2021, at the Avera Granite Falls Care Center. She is survived by her husband Myron of Wood Lake; son Bob (Paula) of Wood Lake; grandchildren Sidney, Parker, and Preston; brother Freddie Goltz of Renville; as well as many relatives and friends.
