Alice Margaret (Timm) Kvistad was born on October 4, 1931, in Posen Township near Wood Lake, MN to Julius and Augusta (Todt) Timm. She was the youngest of six siblings. Alice was baptized at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church. She attended Wood Lake Public School and graduated in 1949. Alice married John Kvistad on November 29, 1950. They were wed at St. John’s Lutheran parsonage and celebrated 57 years together. In their first years of marriage, they lived in the Echo and Wood Lake area, eventually settling on the Kvistad family farm where they raised their ten children. The years were filled with school activities, horse shows and rodeos, pets, hunting, music, and love. Alice was an active member of American Lutheran Church and served in many capacities there. She regularly attended a homemakers group and was a mentor to many young farm wives. She was a “north star” to her family and friends, always guiding with her kind spirit. Alice was a gifted cook and baker and loved to share her gift with others. Sunday dinners were something special and enjoyed by her family, along with all who came through her door. Fried chicken, scalloped potatoes and lefse were plentiful. In addition to raising her children, much of her working life was spent in the care of others. John and Alice had a polka band and loved to play for local parades and events. In their later years they moved from the family farm to Starbuck where they spent several years enjoying lake life. In 2003 they returned to Granite Falls to what Alice affectionately called “the little brown house”. They attended Rock Haven Church and enjoyed many friendships gained there. Alice is survived by ten children, thirty-two grandchildren, thirty-three great-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren on the way, and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her siblings, and one grandson (Avaran Kvistad). Alice’s legacy will live on in the hearts of her family and friends, and she will never be forgotten.
