On September 18, 1937, a son was born to Arthur and Pauline (Kotval) Christensen on the family homestead near Lucan, Minnesota. He was their ninth child. They named him Albert but he preferred to be called Bert. Bert lived and worked on the homestead his entire life. In 1978, Bert met the love of his life, Ellen Ericksen and they were married on September 23, 2000 at the Little Brown Church in the Vale located in Nashua, Iowa. Bert and Ellen were inseparable, going everywhere together. They enjoyed long drives, auctions and visiting with family and friends and having visitors. He didn't talk much but he said a lot. He was quiet and wise; a gentle giant. He was profound with a dry wit and unique sense of humor. Everyone remembers his little wink after a tease. Although it did not seem as though he had many accomplishments, his great personality was the best accomplishment anyone could have. Family and friends were very important to Bert. He never had any children of his own but loved every one of his nieces and nephews and step-family grandchildren and great grandchildren as if they were his own. Bert and his younger brother James had an extra special bond which continued to be strong even after James' death. Bert had a huge heart and loved animals, especially his dogs which were very spoiled with his love and affection. They were his best friends and always brought him joy. He loved farming, tractors, air planes, classic cars, heavy machinery and construction equipment, bulldozing anything in sight. He was a master mechanic and could work on and fix almost anything. Bert had built several race cars and going to the stock car races at Redwood Speedway on Sunday evenings was something he really enjoyed. Although he never drove, he enjoyed watching others drive the cars that he made go so fast. Bert always looked forward to spending time with family up at the cabin at Lake Oscar near Alexandria. Bert was very proud of his Catholic faith, loved his country and respected our military. On Monday, June 25, 2018, Bert passed away peacefully at the Sunwood-Good Samaritan Society in Redwood Falls, Minnesota, at the age of 80 years. He is survived by his siblings Jean Turgeon, Mary Ann Iovino, Art Christensen Jr., and Cathy Allex; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Ellen, and siblings Althea Miller, Lawrence (Sonny) Christensen, Lorraine (Rainy) Christensen, Donald (Tyke) Christensen, Gilbert Christensen, and James Christensen.
